How to Choose the Best Candidate After AI Image Expansion

How to Choose the Best Candidate After AI Image Expansion

Multiple candidates are useful because image expansion is not a single correct answer. The model can extend the same source image in different ways. One result may preserve the subject better. Another may create a cleaner background. A third may have the best composition for the target platform.

The review process is where you turn generated options into a usable publishing asset.

Start with the subject

The subject matters more than the background. If the product, person, building or object changed shape, the candidate is usually not worth keeping.

Check:

  • Edges of the subject
  • Hands, faces and product outlines
  • Logos or text on packaging
  • Reflections and shadows
  • Any duplicated subject details

If the subject is unstable, move to another candidate even if the background looks impressive.

Then inspect the expanded background

The new background should support the original image, not compete with it. Look for smooth continuation of lines, textures and lighting.

Common issues include:

  • Repeated patterns
  • Broken horizon lines
  • Unnatural shadows
  • Objects that appear only in the expanded area
  • Background details that pull attention away from the subject

For social covers, clean and quiet often works better than overly detailed.

Compare composition for the platform

A candidate that looks good as an image may still fail as a cover. Each platform adds its own interface, captions or cropping behavior.

For 9:16 covers, leave enough space near the top and bottom. For feed posts, make sure the subject does not feel too small. For Pinterest, check that the vertical composition still has a clear focal point.

Open the image at full size

Small previews can hide problems. Before downloading, open the candidate in a larger view and inspect the edges. This is especially important for 9:16 results, where the top and bottom areas may contain the most generated content.

If you are choosing between two candidates, pick the one that survives the full-size check.

A simple scoring method

Use this quick checklist:

  1. Subject is unchanged.
  2. Background looks continuous.
  3. Composition fits the target platform.
  4. No obvious artifacts at the edges.
  5. The result still feels like the original image.

The best candidate is the one that passes the most real publishing checks, not the one that looks most dramatic in a small preview.
